Feels great to be home!

We’re back on Canadian soil! WOW WOW WOW!!!!. It feels insane really. It’s such a crazy feeling to be back in such familiar territory but to have it feel so unfamiliar. It’s a hard thing to explain, and it’s something I wouldn’t have really known to expect, but it’s been weird. It’s been great of course, but still weird.  It’s been almost two days now since we landed in Toronto and we’ve been fighting off jet lag and reverse culture shock, but we’ve also been having an amazing time catching up with our travel guru’s, friends and former co-workers  from New Zealand Sheryl and Chris.  They picked us up from the airport and we’ve been staying with them for our first few days back “home”.

Before I go any further in this post, I want to give a huge shout out to Mom and Vicky for coming all the way to Thailand and Hong Kong to travel with us and to escort our broke butt’s home. We had an unforgettable time with you. YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!!!

Anyways, we’ve packed a lot in to our short stay here in Toronto. We had a chance to hang out and have dinner with friends Greg and James and their beautiful dog Amber, explore a little bit of the city and to make a trip out to Niagara Falls, Niagara on the Lake and a Butterfly Conservancy. It was my first visit to the Niagara region so I had a particularly great time. Sheryl and Chris have been the most incredible hosts and it’s been amazing having them be our re-introduction to Canadian life. They are the only people that really understand what we are going through right now as they themselves traveled for four years and two days and have only been back for one year.  We’ve already had countless conversations about the old traveling life. I don’t think any of us can really believe that we are back in Canada for the foreseeable future. But we are, so it’s time to get adjusting!

There are so many reasons to be happy about being home: one of my best friends has just had a baby girl, we finally get to meet Luke’s new nephew and get to know his now four year old nephew as well, my brother is getting married this summer, we’re finally getting back to the lake, I’m going back to school and of course we are just generally thrilled to see all of our family and friends again. It’s been too long.

Even though we’re elated to be home, it’s going to take some time to get used to the way things work around here. I am seeing things in a really different light at the moment. I didn’t expect to feel this way and naively thought I wouldn’t need to adjust at all. I’ve had this idea of Canada in my head for quite some time and I’ve been comparing things all along to this idea of home but it turns out the things in my head aren’t quite the Canadian reality. There’s no point in getting into specifics here, but I will say that life is looking so NICE here in Canada. Things are clean, orderly, efficient, friendly and just plain NICE. This is the word I keep coming back to. It’s just a pleasant place to be. But, it also feels really ‘rules-y’, and possibly a bit too orderly. Sometimes it seems like Canada needs to just loosen up a bit :) .  It’s hard to criticize such a great place though.

This will be one of our final posts on the site. We might write a few more lists and if life gets interesting once again we might pick the blog back up. I hope we do. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time until we hit the road again. This blog alone has been a great ride. Our memories are on this website and I love that we can always come here to re-visit them. Thank you, dear readers and friends for coming along with us on our 837 day, 3o country journey across the globe. We love you and hope you have enjoyed reading about our travels. Until next time…

Welcome home. It’s nice to know you’re back in Canada but it will be even better when you’re back in Winnipeg. Your Dad and I went to the lake today for our annual look see at our cottage to see how it wintered. All is OK and just small patches of snow and not many of those. Before we left your parents house though I got to lift Luke’s backpack. Holy Cr%$ is it ever heavy. I can’t imagine lugging that around for any length of time. Auntie Lynn & I will be going down to the lake to stay in about 2 weeks so that’s where we’ll meet up. As always – stay safe.
