A Year in the Life

A Year in the Life

Wow wow wow wow wow! As of today we have been on the road, or away from home for one entire year. Right now this is all feeling very crazy to me for several reasons. First of all I honestly cannot believe how quickly this year has gone by. We arrived back in Maui yesterday morning and in so many ways it felt like we never left, never mind that we had done so many amazing things in the time in between. The other reason this one year travel anniversary date seems crazy to me is that in the past I had always imagined that in travelling for a year you would have the time to see the entire world, or at least as much of it as you were keen to see. I thought that in this year we would visit at least a few continents and a minimum of ten countries. On the complete contrary we spent the entire year in Oceania, spending our time mostly concentrated in a few countries.

Fiji Part 2

When we boarded the ferry to Taveuni, we weren’t expecting much. Through our conversations with Sheryl and Chris we knew that ferries throughout the Pacific Islands could be a little ‘lacking in facilities’ to put it lightly. We were pleasantly surprised to board the ship and see that it was an old BC Ferry with quite a few left-over Canadian touches such as glass doors with beavers and lumberjacks on them, and BC Ferry labels all over everything from the lifeboats to the unfortunately empty soap dispensers. Despite the fact that the ship may have been Canadian at one point it was 100% Fijian now, meaning that there were no shoes allowed indoors and people were camped out on every inch of the floor throughout the windowless seating areas. Granted, we were in the economy seating section, but it did not seem like a very comfortable space for hundreds of people to spend 18+ hours. Luckily the four of us managed to grab two rows of four seats in the back corner all to ourselves. Over the next 22 hours we watched a few dreadful movies being shown on the boat (one was literally titled “Muslim Propaganda” featuring two men lecturing for two hours straight), drank a few sneaky beers/bounties, and slept as much as we could before finally arriving in Taveuni four hours later than the 18 hour schedule.

Fiji Part 1

Ever since I was a kid I have always dreamed of going to Fiji. For me, the name itself is synonymous with exotic island paradise and I was desperate to experience it. Even though we have been to three different pacific nations so far (yes, Hawaii does count), and I was sure that Fiji wouldn’t differ that much, I was still very interested in checking it off of that “places I want to visit list”. We were also excited to visit Fiji because we had made plans months earlier to meet up with two of our Canadian friends and co-workers from Funky Green after leaving New Zealand.
